COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT ANNOUNCES
CHANCELLOR CANDIDATE FORUM
Members of the college community and the public will be able to meet,
question and hear presentations from the three finalists for the position
of Chancellor on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 from 2:00 p.m.
5:00 p.m. at Los Angeles Trade-Technical Colleges Learning
Resources Center. Each candidate will have 50 minutes to speak and
answer questions.
Guests will have an opportunity to record their comments for review by
the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees, who will make the
final selection.
The forums will be moderated by David Rattray, VP, LA Area Chamber of
Commerce and a member of the Chancellor Search Committee; this committee
of representatives of various campus constituencies and community groups
selected the three finalists. The candidate presentations will be in the

Arterberry, Stan
Mr. Arterberry has served as Chancellor of the West Valley Mission
Community College District in Santa Clara County since 2002. Before that
he was Superintendent-President at Solano Community College in Solano
County, President at Merritt College in Oakland, President at West Hills
Community College in Coalinga, after various other administrative positions
at community colleges in California. His career in the California Community
Colleges began with a teaching position in Sociology and History at Riverside
City College.
McPhail, Irving Pressley
Dr. McPhail has served as Chancellor of the Community College of Baltimore
County, MD since 1998. Prior to that he was President of St. Louis Community
College at Florissant Valley, Provost at PACE University in New York,
Dean at Wayne State Community College, President of LeMoyne-Owen College
in Memphis, and Vice President and Dean at Delaware State University,
and held various administrative positions at Johns Hopkins University,
University of Maryland and Morgan State University. He began as an instructor
at Morgan State University in 1971.
Young, Darroch Rocky
Mr. Young has served as interim Senior Vice Chancellor of the Los Angeles
Community College District since January 2004, and President of Los Angeles
Pierce College since 1999. Prior to that he served at Santa Monica Community
College as Vice President of Planning and Development and Vice President
of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. Prior to that he held various
other administrative positions at Santa Monica Community College after
service as a faculty member in Business starting in 1971. He spent one
year as a consultant on post Proposition 13 finance in the office of the
Chancellor of the California Community Colleges in Sacramento.
The Board of Trustees authorized the Interim Chancellor, Peter Landsberger,
to conduct the search with his staff, and has also employed Community
College Search Services, based in Ventura, CA, to assist in the process.
CCSS provides such executive search services to many community college
districts in the state. The budget for the search is $71,900. Advertising
was done in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Black Issues in Higher
Education, Hispanic Outlook, Asian Week, Academic Careers Online, and
the California Community Colleges State Diversity Registry, as well as
the Districts own website. The District also sent a recruitment
letter and brochure in a nationwide mailing to all community colleges
and four year colleges and universities in the United States.
The total LACCD unrestricted general fund budget is $428 million, out
of a total budget of $1,114 million, which includes the budget for the
capital construction programs under Propositions A and AA.
