We have always believed we are unique, but how and why has changed throughout human history.
My class will focus on how different cultures and eras have understood what it means to be human. By that I mean a focus on how we have understood our relationship to ourselves, those around us, and our place in the universe. We will study the art, history, sociology, and philosophy of various cultures in order to better understand how we define who we are in the world.
We will cover ancient civilizations in the Middle East, the Far East, Africa, Central America, as well as Ancient Greece and Rome. It is important to recognize their contributions to world history and our lives and culture today. I believe that in order to better understand where we are going, we first need to understand where we have been, and how past views of what it means to be human has shaped the world today.
I look forward to this semester and hearing how you shape your world view as you continue your education as Mission College.
