A comparison-contrast essay takes two subjects, compares its similarities and contrasts them to show how they are different.
Like we did with “Hangin’ with the Homeboys,” comparing and contrasting the characters of Johnny and Fernando, write a comparison-contrast essay based on these two stories: Brent Staples’s “Black Men and Public Space” and Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “The Myth of the Latin Woman”. You will take “The Myth of the Latin Woman” and “Black Men and Public Space” and compare the similarities and contrast the differences.
For your introduction, write a brief summary of each story. A summary should be 1-2 sentences. When you mention the stories for the first time, write the authors’ names and the stories’ title. Then write a thesis statement comparing and contrasting the two essays. Example: While Judith Ortiz Cofer considers the stereotypes of Latin women, Brent Staples points out the social views of African American men, in terms of ... (and give three reasons).
Here are some reasons to consider:
1) Encounters with strangers
2) Stereotypes of their races
3) Their appearances
4) Growing up
5) Their “solutions” to the raee problem
For each body paragraph, the topic sentence should be on one reason. Also, in each body paragraph, use one quote from each story that supports your thesis statement. Each quote needs a lead (stating who wrote the quote) before the quote and the author's last name and page number in parenthesis after the quote.
Example: Cofer stated, "I suffered from what I think of as 'cultural schizophrenia'" (Cofer 154).
After each quote, an explanation of the quote is needed to explain its importance of the topic sentence in your body paragraph.
For your conclusion, restate your thesis statement and end with the answer to this question: Who do you relate to the most, Cofer or Staples?. Explain your answer.
The essay will need an additional page: a Work Cited page. A Work Cited page indicates the works you quoted in the essay. It is to let the reader to know from where you got the quote.
Each work cited should include: Author's last name, author's first name. "Title of story." Title of Book. Ed. Editor's name. Publication location: Publisher's name, publication year. Page numbers. Medium. (As explained in class).
The essay must be typed and double-spaced and must include a title. The first draft of your essay is due Tuesday, Nov. 12. The final draft is due Tuesday, Nov. 19.
