Theme: What Melts Ice the Fastest?
Curriculum Area: Science
Age of Group: 3-4 years
Group size: 5-6 children
Rationale: Children will predict about which substance melts the ice fastest. Children will learn which substance melts the ice fastest.
Social: All of the children will take turns doing the experiment and putting substances on the ice. Some of the children will share the materials like spoons and droppers. Most of the children will take turns predicting the outcome. Some of the children will discuss any noticeable changes - cracks, holes, etc in the ice.
Emotional: Most of the children will show joy and pride while doing the experiment. Some of the children will show excitement when their predictions come true.
Physical: All of the children will use their fine motor skills while spooning or using droppers to put the substances on the ice. They will use hand-eye coordination to put the substances on the ice and observe it melt.
Cognitive: Most of the children will make predictions about the outcome. Most of the children will observe the results of the experiment and will learn which substance melts the ice fastest. Some of the children will compare their predictions with the correct outcome.
Materials: Cups, water, freezer---- to make ice; hot water, cold water, salt, sugar, vinegar, baking soda, spoons, droppers, plates.
Freeze cups of water - 1 for each substance used. Remove ice from cups and put on a plate.
Have substances to be used readily available along with spoons and droppers for pouring. First discuss what you are going to do and let children make predictions over which items they think would melt the ice the fastest. Make a chart for the predictions. Have children add substances to each ice block wait for 5 minutes and note the reactions, and discuss what has happened to the ice. Which one is melting the fastest, slowest, and discuss any noticeable changes - cracks, holes, etc in the ice. Record the results. Discuss if the predictions made were correct and what was learned.
Cooking- Make fruit smoothies with ice cubes.
