One of the student asked me about problems that give you solutions with constant "c".

When one row in a matrix is all zeros, that means we can't solve for z, so y and x would have to be functions of z. For example, if you do the Elementary Row Operations and you end up with a matrix that give you the following equations:

x+y+2z=5

y+z=3

from the second equation: y= 3-z and

from the first equation: x=5-y-2z

you'll notice that both x and y are really functions of z. If you let z=c then

y=3-c and x=5-(3-z)-2z=5-(3-c)-2c= 2-c
