The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Program at Los Angeles Mission College is a project funded through the U.S. Department of Education to significantly improve access and success for Hispanic students and other students under- represented in these fields. As a component of the program, the STEM Summer Academy offers an academic bridge for new high school graduates and current Mission students who recently entered the College.
The five-week Academy will consists of:
Personal Development – a college introduction course for STEM majors;
Math Boot Camp – uniquely designed based on student math placement level; or
Math 240 Trigonometry – three-unit course specially offered for STEM majors; AND Writing for Science Workshops – focusing on fundamental skills for college composition.
Throughout the Academy, students will be exposed to special events and activities related to STEM.
Dates and Times:
July 9 to August 10, 2012 Monday to Thursday 8 AM to 1 PM (may vary depending on math placement)
Student Selection:
The selection process will be conducted by the STEM Summer Academy staff and will be based on the following criteria:
- Be a high school graduate enrolling at Mission in Fall 2012 or current Mission student with less than 18 units
- Completed STEM Summer Academy Application
- High recommendation from an instructor
- Demonstrate a strong interest in the STEM field
- Taken the math placement test by April 30, 2012
- A FREE program to jump start your STEM studies and career
- A scholarly community that provides support and networking opportunities
- Higher placement in math possible after completion of the Math Boot Camp
- Math tutoring
- STEM academic counseling and advisement
- Transfer and career advisement
- Priority participation in the STEM Program starting in Fall 2012
- Professional and leadership skills development
