Womens softball team better balanced in 2004
With
the womens softball program about to begin its second
year, coach Kelly Lovato looks for a more balanced squad in
2004.
"This years team doesnt have as many weaknesses
as last years," she said. "I think were
better balanced at all positions."
Four players are returning from last years team. Several
new players, most from San Fernando High School, join them.
"They have a good tradition there," said Lovato.
"Theyre always one of the top teams in the City
Section, so we hope for good things from these players."
Lovato expects leadership from several returning players.
Co-captain Samantha Dempsey, first base and left field, led
the team last year in almost every batting category and on-base
percentage. Gloria Murillo is another captain. The centerfielder
was last years most inspirational player, said Lovato.
And shortstop Tamara LaBreche was last years best defensive
player. Shes expected to provide leadership on the diamond.
Pitching
duties will fall mostly to Tina Casillas, who helped lead
her Simi High School team to the Marmont League championship
last year, said Lovato.

All
in all, Lovato hopes for improvement over last year. The 2003
team finished at just under .500.
"There seems to be a great work ethic and dedication
on the field from this years team," she said. "The
returning players have been leaders and set examples for the
new players."
Non-conference play for the womens softball team continues
through Feb. 21, including a home game at El Cariso Park against
USC on Feb. 13. Conference play begins on Feb. 24 against
Santa Barbara College, away. The first home conference game
will be on Feb. 26 against Hancock College.
Home games are played at El Cariso Park.
