Larry Avicola got the call
the day after Katrina hit.
The Mission College catering
manager heard from his brother-in-law,
a battalion chief in Pascagoula,
Mississippi. It was a plea
for help.
He
said everyone (in the family)
was alive but they needed
help, outside help, because
the area was devastated,
Avicola recalled in a recent
interview.

L.A.
Council
welcomes Dr. Barrera
The
Los Angeles City Council welcomed Dr.
Adriana D. Barrera to the downtown
circle at a ceremony on September 30.
Councilman Alex Padilla arranged the welcome,
designed to introduce Barrera to the council
upon her selection as senior vice chancellor
for the Los Angeles Community College District.
Dr. Barrera remains at Mission College while
a search for an interim president goes forward.
Councilman Padilla, joined by Councilman
Tony Cardenas, praised Barrera for increasing
the number of degrees and certificates awarded
by the college; and for increasing the number
of students transferring to CSU and UC,
both by about 25 percent, during her tenure
as president.
About 35 members of the college staff attended
the ceremony.

An
intense summer for interns
For
many college students, summer
means a break from study...or
a chance to earn money before
classes resume in the fall.
For a group of Mission College
students, it meant an intense
internship with scientists in
the bio-medical field. And, by
all accounts, everyone involved
got their moneys worth,
so to speak.
