The Los Angeles Mission College Family Development Network and Pacoima Elementary School will join with 300 children and their parents to celebrate "Dia de los Niños." It's going to be a day of fun-filled activities for children, and an opportunity for parents in the northeast San Fernando Valley to learn about after-school services, safety programs for children (e.g., child fingerprinting) and parenting workshops available to them.

KMEX Channel 34 reporter Teresa Quevedo will give the keynote address. She will be joined by Los Angeles City Council President Alex Padilla, who will welcome the families to the event. The Los Angeles City Fire Department and the Los Angeles Police Department Explorer Program will provide additional activities.

El Dia de los Niños is a traditional Latin American holiday which has been celebrated by many cities and organizations in the United States since 1998, following passage of U.S. Senate Resolution 278 declaring the day. It is a day set aside for parades, book festivals, health fairs and other activities promoting the well being of children.

Mission College's Family Development Network is a City of Los Angeles-funded program charged with providing low-income families in Pacoima with the tools to become self-reliant and to provide support services needed for positive family development. Its director is Angelica Toledo (818.837.2236).
