Notes from the Tech Ed 2008 Conference

This was my first Tech Ed Conference, and the presentations, hands-on sessions, and roundtables I attended gave me so many ideas for creating student workshops, Flex Day activities, and tutor training.

  • Most important was the information about free tools available for educators and students. I know that students who do not have word processing, presentation, or spreadsheet software available at home will benefit from this information:
    • Google Productivity Tools
    • ZOHO Writer, Sheet, Show, Notebook (all require a sign-up, but are free)
    • Scribus (free desktop publishing program)
  • Most inspiring was the presentation by faculty from College of Alameda about how they created, on a budget of $0, online tutoring for their online students.
  • Most helpful was the presentation on grant writing (PPT or PDF form). We need to find a way to fund more tutoring, and I want to research grants for the LRC, especially for online tutoring.
I also attended presentations of the following software:
  • Captivate 3: Adobe provides the software to quickly and easily create online tutorials by capturing screen images and adding audio. Free 30-day trial (word of warning: the tutorials you create using this free trial will become inactive after the trial period ends). I wish we had had this software in February when we were struggling to help all the ESL students and faculty learn how to enroll in their new Longman English Interactive courseware. This software is on my personal wish list!
  • Adobe Flash: The demonstration on making interactive quizzes using Flash will certainly come in handy as a Flex Day or Prof Dev activity for faculty. I plan to use this software to create training modules for tutors.
