Financial Aid - Financial Aid Process
Financial Aid Process
Step 1: The Application Process
A. Apply for a U.S. Department of Education Personal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov. Your PIN serves as an e-signature to electronically sign your financial aid application.
If you are a dependent student, your parent may also apply for a PIN to expedite the financial aid process.
B. After you receive your PIN, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Los Angeles Mission College's Federal School Code is 012550.
BE WARNED!!!
There is a bogus website asking students to provide their credit card details to process their FAFSA application. FAFSA is FREE! Do not pay any money to apply for financial aid.
Do NOT go to www.fafsa.com
Step 2: After you have submitted your FAFSA either via the web or by paper, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). You need to review your Student Aid Report to make sure the information is correct. The Student Aid Report is a summary of your FAFSA data. You do not need to submit your SAR to the college. We will receive your electronic data from the Central Processing System as long as you have listed our school code on your FAFSA.
Step 3: Await notification from our Financial Aid Office
- All financial aid students are required to complete the Student Authorization/Information/Educational Goal Form. Go to Financial Aid Forms to download the form.
- The Central Processing System will send us your information electronically. We will review your FAFSA data, and if necessary, we will request additional documentation (i.e. Tax Return) to verify your information.
- How to submit forms to the Financial Aid Office:
You may submit the required forms to the Financial Aid Office in person, by mail, or by fax. We recommend you submit forms and required documentation we ask you in person so we can review the forms. We will not accept incomplete documents. If you mail incomplete documents, we will mail the forms back to you with further instructions.
- We will also review your Satisfactory Academic Progress. You will be notified in writing if you have been placed on Disqualification.
- We will also review your FAFSA data against your Admissions records at our college. It is very important that you answer the following items accurately on your Admissions Application:
i. Educational Goal you need to officially declare a program goal on your Admission Application
ii. High School Graduate status
iii. Citizenship Status
iv. Demographic Data (mailing address, telephone number)
If there is a discrepancy on any one of the above items, we will send you a letter to explain the discrepancy which can cause a delay on your financial aid application process.
Step 4: Award Notification
- After we have reviewed your financial aid application and all necessary items, we will send you an Award Letter. The Award Letter notifies you of the awards you are eligible.
- You need to read the Award Guide that is attached with your Award Letter. The Award Guide will provide valuable information regarding your financial aid award and your responsibilities as a financial aid recipient.
- If the Award Letter includes a Federal Work Study award, you need to contact our office at (818) 364-7648 for work study assignment within 14 days from the date of the Award Letter. If you do not respond after 14 days, the Federal Work Study award will be cancelled and you will receive a revised Award Letter.
- Federal Student Loans are not automatically awarded. You will need to attend our Student Loan Workshop. For workshop dates, please call our office.
Step 5: Disbursement
- Financial Aid warrants, except for loans, are either sent by mail or transferred electronically (EFT) to the student’s bank account.
- We recommend the EFT process because financial aid warrants are deposited on your bank account on disbursement date. You will avoid the hassle of standing in line at the bank to deposit your financial aid warrant(s)
- It is very important that you notify the Financial Aid Office of address and phone number changes as soon as possible.
- You may also view your disbursement schedule via the web at www.laccd.edu
- The financial aid awards listed on your Award Letter are based on the assumption that students will enroll full-time. The actual disbursement amount will reflect your actual active units at the time of disbursement.
