Emphasis is placed on beginning grammar and vocabulary, listening, speaking
and reading, and development of writing through guided composition.

Prerequisite: ESL 2 with C or appropriate placement score.

Emphasizes low intermediate grammar and writing development through guided
and free composition.
3B COLLEGE
ESL III:READING/VOCABULARY
Prerequisite: ESL 2 with C or appropriate placement score.
| Lecture: 3 hours. NDA 3 UNITS
Builds reading and vocabulary skills through the reading of passages on
a wide variety of interesting topics. Note: Student must take 3B + 3C
together.
3C COLLEGE
ESL III: LISTENING/SPEAKING
Prerequisite: ESL 2 with C or appropriate placement score.
| Lecture: 3 hours. NDA 3 UNITS
Builds oral and listening comprehension skills, as well as the learning
of new conversational forms. Note: Student must take 3B + 3C together.

Emphasizes high intermediate grammar and writing development leading to
college-level writing proficiency.

ESL IV: READING/VOCABULARY
Prerequisite: ESL 3B with C or appropriate placement score.

Builds reading and vocabulary skills through the reading and discussion
of high-intermediate passages.
Note: Student must take 4B + 4C together.
4C COLLEGE
ESL IV:LISTENING/SPEAKING
Prerequisite: ESL 3C with C or appropriate placement score.

Development of oral and listening skills, necessary for the classroom,
and professional and personal life.
Note: Student must take 4B + 4C together.

ESL V:WRITING/GRAMMAR
Prerequisite: ESL 4A with Cor appropriate placement score.

Development of college level writing proficiency as well as the grammatical
forms necessary for mature writing.
5B COLLEGE
ESL V:READING/VOCABULARY
Prerequisite: ESL 4B with C or appropriate placement score.
| Lecture: 3 hours. NDA 3 UNITS
Emphasizes the development of college-level reading proficiency. There
will be reading and discussion of authentic, but simple essays and passages
from textbooks, as well as longer fictional works. Note: Student must
take 5B + 5C together.
5C COLLEGE
ESL V:LISTENING/SPEAKING
Prerequisite: ESL 4C with C or appropriate placement score.
| Lecture: 3 hours. NDA 3 UNITS
It focuses on oral and listening skills necessary to allow students to
function and participate actively in academic classes and formal personal
situations. Note: Student must take 5B + 5C together.
6 COLLEGE
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE VI
Prerequisite: ESL 5 or appropriate placement score demonstrated through
the ESL assessment process. | lecture: 12 hours. NDA 12 UNITS

6A COLLEGE
ESL VI:WRITING/GRAMMAR
Prerequisite: ESL 5A with a passing writing sample or appropriate placement
score. | Lecture: 6 hours. NDA 6 UNITS
There is intensive practice in writing and critical skills that students
need in college courses and on the job.
6B COLLEGE
ESL VI:READING/VOCABULARY
Prerequisite: ESL 5B with C or appropriate placement score.
| Lecture: 3 hours. NDA 3 UNITS
Develops college reading versatility and efficiency, critical reading
skills in analyzing difficult material.
Note: Student must take 6B + 6C together.
6C COLLEGE
ESL VI: LISTENING/SPEAKING
Prerequisite: ESL 5C with C or appropriate placement score.
| Lecture: 3 hours. NDA 3 UNITS
Improves listening skills to aid in the comprehension of lectures, and
improves oral skills in order to participate more effectively in the classroom
and business world.

AS A SECOND LANGUAGE LEVEL 1
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 5 hours. NDA 5 UNITS

This course is for students who are beginning to learn English as a second
language. It is as introduction to basic English structure and to the
sound system integrating oral and written
communication.

AS A SECOND LANGUAGE LEVEL 2
Prerequisite:Appropriate placement score | Lecture: 5 hours. NDA 5 UNITS
Note: Class graded credit/no-credit.
This course focuses on content-centered units from which relevant vocabulary
will be learned,and around which grammar lessons will be centered. Emphasis
is on tenses, irregular past tense verbs, modals, comparatives and superlative
forms of adjectives. Score on the placement test determines placement.

READING AND CONVERSATION A
Prerequisite: Limited English | Lecture: 3 hours. NDA 3 UNITS
Note: Class graded credit/no-credit.
This course offers reading and conversation applying the principles taught
in ESL 1, 2, and 3.Vocabulary acquisition and dictation are emphasized
as well as listening skills in English.

Fluency in reading English, understanding literal and inferential comprehension
questions, vocabulary development, listening in English.

CONVERSATIONAL ESL
Prerequisite:Appropriate placement score | Lecture: 5 hours. NDA 5 UNITS
Note: Class graded credit/no-credit.
Students enrolled in this course will hold conversations and give reports
based on readings and vocabulary essential for everyday life situations,
the college environment and other areas of culcultural
and social interest.
