1 ELEMENTARY
CHINESE I
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 2 hours, lab 2 hour. UC:CSU 5 UNITS
This course stresses the fundamentals of pronunciation and grammar, practical
vocabulary, useful phrases, and the ability to understand, speak read,
and write basic Chinese. It includes an introduction to Chinese civilization
and culture.
2 ELEMENTARY
CHINESE II
Prerequisite: Chinese 1 | Lecture: 5 hours. UC:CSU 5 UNITS
This course emphasizes Mandarin Chinese communication of travelling, dining
out, and daily living, along with culture and geography.
3 INTERMEDIATE
CHINESE I
Prerequisite: Chinese 2 | Lecture: 5 hours. CSU 5 UNITS
Course emphasizes Mandarin Chinese communication relative to historic
sites, like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the customs of Chinas
55 nationalities, Beijing Opera, and Chinese cuisine.
4 INTERMEDIATE
CHINESE II
Prerequisite: Chinese 3 | Lecture: 5 hours. UC:CSU 5 UNITS
Course emphasizes Mandarin Chinese communication which covers the colorful
culture of China the countrys maternal river from the Potala
Palace in Tibet, the old alley and courtyard in Beijing, and the conflict
between traditional and modern values in peoples thoughts.

CIVILIZATION
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 3 hours. CSU 3 UNITS
This course explores the fabulous world of Chinese history, geography,
arts literature, religion, customs, and the impact of 1/4 of mankind beyond
the Great Wall. Conducted in English, enriched with optional Chinese.

OF CHINESE I
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 3 hours. CSU 3 UNITS
First half of the first course in understanding, reading, and writing
Chinese. Emphasis will be on Mandarin with an introduction to Chinese
culture and civilization. Chinese 21 + 22 together are equivalent to Chinese
