101 SURVEY OF ART HISTORY I

Required of Art majors | Lecture: 3 hours. UC:CSU 3 UNITS
A study is made of the historical development of art from the prehistoric through the gothic era, with attention given to the painting, sculpture and architecture of each period. Emphasis is put on the relationship of art to culture within our western artistic tradition; with a brief survey of eastern, pacific and pre- Columbian periods included. Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 110.

102 SURVEY OF ART HISTORY II
(CAN ART 4;CAN ART SEQ A: Art 101 + 102)
Prerequisite: None | Advisory: English 21
Required of Art majors | Lecture: 3 hours. UC:CSU 3 UNITS
It is not necessary to take Art 101 before 102. A study is made of the historical development of art from the Renaissance through the Twentieth Century,with attention given to the painting, sculpture and architecture of western tradition. Emphasis is put on the relationship of art to culture. Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 111.

103 ART APPRECIATION I
Prerequisite: English 21 | Lecture: 3 hours. UC:CSU 3 UNITS
An introductory course that involves the students in an exploration into the nature and appreciation of the visual arts.The students will learn how and why various art forms came into being and will study the main problems likely to be encountered in the understanding and interpretation of these art forms.
Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 105.

109 THE ARTS OF AFRICA OCEANIA, AND ANCIENT AMERICA
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 3 hours. UC:CSU 3 UNITS
This course is a survey of the painting, sculpture, architecture and crafts of Africa, the Pacific Ocean areas and the Indians of North and South America in relation to their history, religion, and general culture. Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 112.

112 CURRENT ART EVENTS
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 3 hours. CSU 3 UNITS
This course is an enrichment of the student's academic experiences and expansion of student's cultural awareness by providing opportunities to attend a wide variety of art exhibits and events presented in the greater Los Angeles area and opportunities to discuss these activities with quest artists and faculty.

115 HISTORY OF MODERN ART

This course is an examination of the history of Western art and its relationship to social, political, and economic aspects of modern society, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

201 DRAWING I

A fundamental course which emphasizes the rendering of forms in various media and expressive methods. It progresses from basic drawing concepts to more complex forms. Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 124A.

Continuation of Art 201, with emphasis on expressive methods, including studies of media exploration.

203 DRAWING III

This is an advanced course in drawing. Emphasis is placed on developing an advanced ability to observe and render selected subjects including the human head and hands studies from life. Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 224B.

204 LIFE DRAWING I

This course presents a fundamental approach to learning to draw the human figure with an emphasis on anatomy and essential structure. Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 124B.

205 LIFE DRAWING II

This is an intermediate course in drawing the human figure. Emphasis is place on developing extended knowledge of human anatomy and acquiring enhanced skill in rendering its essential

A study is made of the major representational and non-objective styles of painting with emphasis on fundamental painting techniques.

304 ACRYLIC PAINTING I

Course is a continuation of Art 300 with emphasis on fundamental acrylic painting techniques and selected ideas and processes of painting.

305 ACRYLIC PAINTING II
Prerequisite:Art 304 | Lecture: 2 hours, lab 2 hours. UC:CSU 3 UNITS
Emphasis on two-dimensional pictorial structure. An application of design fundamentals to imagery and continued study of acrylic painting techniques.

306 ACRYLIC PAINTING III
Prerequisite:Art 305 | Lecture: 2 hours, lab 2 hours. UC:CSU 3 UNITS
Emphasis upon individuality of response to contemporary problems in painting related to representational or nonobjective imagery.

501 BEGINNING TWO- DIMENSIONAL DESIGN

A study of the elements and principles of design. A foundation course in design for application in all subsequent Art major courses. Emphasis is placed upon line, color, texture, shape, and composition.

502 BEGINNING THREE- DIMENSIONAL DESIGN

A study of the elements and principles of design, emphasizing projects in three-dimensional materials.

519 DISPLAY TECHNIQUES
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 1 hour. CSU 3 UNITS
This course provides an introduction to the practical application of design concepts as they relate to exhibitions, environments and displays. Students will gain a working knowledge of commercial and college galleries. Exhibition preparation, installation and funding will be presented.

520 DESIGN WORKSHOP

This is a course in the principles of design. Emphasis is placed on individual research, experimentation, and the development of individual abilities. Students work with a variety of equipment including computer applications.

604 GRAPHIC DESIGN I

This is an introductory course in graphic design. Topics include historical overview, terminology, tools, working methods, and basic layout using computer applications. Projects include design and use of symbols, typography, photographs, illustrations, and text in all forms of print and multimedia applications.

605 GRAPHIC DESIGN II

This is an intermediate course in graphic design. Topics include an overview of contemporary styles and advanced computer applications. Advanced projects in design and the use of symbols, typography, photographs, illustrations, and text in multimedia are presented.

606 GRAPHIC DESIGN III

This is an advanced course in graphic design. Topics include an in-depth study of the graphic design industry, computer applications used in the design of both print publication and interactive multimedia and professional portfolio presentations.

620 ILLUSTRATION I

This is an introductory course in illustration. Topics include a historical overview, terminology, drawing skills, tools, working methods, the design and use of symbols and basic layout using computer applications.

633 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER GRAPHICS
Advisory:Art 501 | Lecture: 2 hours, lab 2 hours. 3 UNITS
Develops the understanding and skills necessary in integrating word-processed files, graphic elements and page formatting options in a Macintosh computer desktop publishing environment. Students will develop desktop published documents using basic computer operating skills and today's more popular
publishing software.

635 DESKTOP PUBLISHING DESIGN
Prerequisite:Art 634 | Lecture: 2 hours, lab 2 hours. 3 UNITS
Continues the development of understanding and skills necessary in integrating text and graphic elements with a Macintosh computer. Students will further explore and develop Desktop Published documents emphasizing the elements and principles of design.

637 PRESENTATION GRAPHICS
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 2 hours, lab 2 hours. CSU 3 UNITS
This is a fundamental course in presentation graphics. Topics include terminology, matching audience to presentation type and media, and the use of computer applications to create interactive multimedia for business, education, and entertainment. Acceptable for credit: CSUN: Art 200

638 COMPUTER-AIDED ART LABORATORY
Prerequisite: None | Lab: 2 hours. CSU 1 UNIT RPT3
This course is designed to reinforce lectures presented in each computer-aided art class. It allows the student needed practice in applying he concepts learned to various class assignments.

639 INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL IMAGING
Prerequisite: None | Lecture: 2 hours, lab 2 hours. UC:CSU 3 UNITS
This is a fundamental course in digital imaging. Topics include terminology, techniques used in computer manipulation of photographs, digital capture, color theory, lighting, the printing process, and presentation.

700 INTRODUCTION TO SCULPTURE

This course explores the study and creation of sculptural forms. Emphasis is placed on concept, experimentation, and development of style while applying the techniques of assemblage, wire and plaster, conceptual art, and non-traditional media.

This course explores the appreciation of sculptural forms. Emphasis is placed on concepts experimentation, and development of style while specifically examining cultural identity and public art.

702 SCULPTURE II

This course explores the appreciation and creation of sculpture forms in both traditional and contemporary applications. Emphasis is placed on concept, experimentation, and development of style and skill while applying the techniques of relief design, additive plaster, and cast mold.

703 SCULPTURE III

This course explores the appreciation and creation of sculptural forms in both traditional and contemporary applications. Emphasis is placed on concept, experimentation, and development of style and skill while specifically examining signature style and site-specific installation.

805 INTRODUCTION TO FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY

Employs the tools and techniques of both the artist and the photographer to explore and develop creative and expressive projects.

185 DIRECTED STUDY

Provides opportunity for in depth study of a chosen area of art on a contract basis, under the direction of a supervising instructor. Credit limit: Maximum of 3 units may be taken for credit.

485 INTERNET RESEARCH

Internet Research teaches how to use search engines; basic and advanced searches with Boolean and proximity operators; how to locate materials in various content fields; how to critically evaluate these sources; and how to use and cite electronic sources.
