Chemistry Readiness Exam

LA Mission College Chemistry Readiness Exam Schedule:

The readiness exam is administered by the Department Chair twice a year after the end of Fall and Spring semesters.

For unique circumstances, the exam can also be scheduled at other times upon request. Currently, the schedule is as follows:

  • The 3rd Wednesday of January at 11:00 am
  • The 3rd Wednesday of June at 11:00 am

Students who wish to enroll in Chemistry 101 must pass Chemistry 60, 65, or 68 in the LACCD with a C grade. If you have limited chemistry laboratory experience you are encouraged to enroll in Chemistry 65 in order to acquire the skills needed for the laboratory in Chemistry 101. A placement exam taken elsewhere cannot replace this exam; you must take it here at LA Mission College.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Go to LAMC counseling and ask for the Prerequisite Challenge Petition. Sign up for the Chemistry Readiness Exam (by emailing Said Pazirandeh or Mike Fenton) and bring the completed Prerequisite Challenge Petition with you. YOU MAY ONLY TAKE THIS EXAM ONCE! You will need to bring to the exam a number 2 pencil, your student ID number, a Scantron answer sheet and a NON-PROGRAMMABLE calculator. You will be given a periodic table for the exam. The combination of the exam score and the content in the petition will be evaluated by a Chemistry committee to determine Chemistry 101 eligibility.

CONTENT

This 60-minute test consists of questions based on high school chemistry and high school mathematics. These include questions on solving simple algebraic equations, on the use of proportions and percentages, and on solving word problems. The majority of the test deals with chemistry and is primarily concerned with concepts discussed in Chemistry 65, including: elements and their properties, chemical formulas, concentrations of solutions, gases, oxidation numbers, redox reactions, and the concepts of acids and bases. The best preparation for the test (and for Chemistry 101) is to review the parts of high school algebra and chemistry.

NOTE: ENROLLMENT IN CHEMISTRY 101 REQUIRES COMPLETION OF A MATHEMATICS AND A CHEMISTRY PREREQUISITE. THE READINESS EXAM SATISFIES ONLY THE CHEMISTRY PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENT. CONTACT THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT FOR INFORMATION ABOUT SATISFYING THE MATH REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS COURSE.
