Preamble
The purpose of the organization shall be to foster, promote, maintain, and recognize scholarship; develop programs which offer cultural and social enrichment as part of the total experience of the college; promote service to the college and the community; and to emphasize the development of leadership, character, and judgment.
 
Meetings are held on Wednesday at 1 P.M.
 
Location: Downstairs in the Student Center Build.
 
 
ALPHA GAMMA SIGMA, GAMMA ETA CHAPTER
LOS ANGELES MISSION COLLEGE
 
ARTICLE I: NAME
This organization shall be known as the GAMMA ETA CHAPTER of ALPHA GAMMA SIGMA, the California Community College Honor Society.
ARTICLE II: PURPOSE
The purpose of the organization shall be to foster, promote, maintain, and recognize scholarship; develop programs which offer cultural and social enrichment as part of the total experience of the college; promote service to the college and the community; and to emphasize the development of leadership, character, and judgment.
ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP
Section 1. Initial Membership. A person may attain initial membership if the person has completed 12 semester units of college work in a maximum of 3 semesters* at any recognized institution of higher education and has a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

No units acquired more than 2 years prior to aplication for initial membership shall be used prohibitively.**

*These semesters may be consecutive or non-consecutive.
**Unless they are used as units for applying for initial membership.
Section 2. Temporary Membership. All life members of the California Scholarship Federation and those who graduate with a minimum 3.5 GPA at the high school level shall be invited to become temporary members and shall have, upon payment of dues, all the priviledge of membership except that of holding office.
Section 3. Continuing Membership. Any initial member may attain continuing membership by:
  1. Achieving or maintaining for the previous semester not less than a 3.0 GPA in degree applicable courses.
  2. Continuing members will receive one semester grace for every semester of earned continuing membership. There shall be no two consecutive grace periods.
Section 4. Permanent Membership. A permanent member is any person who has completed 60 semester units fo college course work, with a minimum of 30 units completed at Mission College. Members must apply for permanent membership and meet either of the following requirements:
  1. A person who has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, has earned 18 hours of service points, and has been a member of A.G.S. for at least one term.
  2. Any continuing member who has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better, has earned 36 service hours, and has been a member of A.G.S. for at least two semesters.
  3. Any units completed two (2) years or more prior to application for permanent membership shall not be used prohibitively, provided these units are not used to meet the minimum requirement of 60 semester units.
Section 5. Alumus Member. Any permanent member shall be considered an alumnus member.
Section 6. The Official Certificate. Only permanent members shall be entitled to receive the official certificate of the organization.
Section 7. The Official Pin. A continuing member shall be entitled to wear the Silver Pin of the organization if the member has completed 30 units and earned 18 service hours. Any permanent member shall be entitled to wear the Gold Pin of the organization.
Section 8. Applications for membership must be filed and dues paid by the seventh week of the semester. The amount of the dues shall be determined by the executive committee with the approval of the advisor.
ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS and ELECTIONS
Section 1. Officers
  1. The Elective Officers. Elected officers shall be president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. Only continuing members shall be eligible for these elective offices.
  2. Nominations and Elections. The chairman of the nominating committee shall be appointed by the president with the approval of the executive committee.
    1. A nominating committee of three (3) members shall be nominated from the floor and elected at the first regular meeting held during the third month of the semester.
    2. The nominating committee shall report to the chapter all qualified candidates who have consented to serve.
  3. Election. The election of officers shall be held during the last month of each semester by secret ballot, and a majority of the votes cast shall be necessary for election to office.
  4. Term. The term of officers shall be one semester.
Section 2. Duties of Officers.
  1. President. The president shall be the official representative of the chapter in all State acctivities and to the representative council on campus.
    1. The president shall chair all meetings of the chapter, the board of directors and the executive ccommittee; shall call special meetings when necessary, with the approval of the advisor; and shall perform all other duties pertaining to the office.
    2. After each State Convention, it shall be the responsibility of the president to see that the by-laws are brought into conformity.
    3. The president shall appoint standing and special committee chairmen, with the approval of the execcutive committee, and shall be an ex-officio member of all committees except the nominating committee.
  2. Vice-President. The vice-president shall chair all meetings in the absence of the president; shall serve as chairman of the program committee coordinating social affairs; enrichment activities and cultural functions of the chapter; perform such duties as requested by the president; shall assume all the duties of the president in the event of a vacancy in the office until a new president is elected to fill the un-expired term.
  3. Secretary. The secretary shal record the minutes of the chapter, board of directors, executive committee, and special meetings; shall provide a copy of the minutes to the president and advisor; shall report correspondence; shall keep a copy of the by-laws and standing rules in the secretary's book; shall keep active roll sheet of member attendance at chapter meetings; and shall write all special and official invitations.
  4. Treasurer. The treasurer shall keep a record of all financial accounts; shall report the financial status of the chapter at every regular meeting; shall receive all moneys and record names and amounts during the chapter meetings; shall file all moneys and receipt report with the accounting/business office immediately after each meeting; shall serve as chairman of the membership committee and issue a chapter directory to members.
ARTICLE V: MEETINGS
Section 1. Regular Chapter Meetings. Regular meetings will be held every, for the first seven weeks of the semester; following the seventh week of the semester, meetings will be held every other week.
ARTICLE VI: BOARD OF DIRECTORS and EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The Board of Directors shall be composed of the elected officers and the chairpersons of standing committees. It shall conduct the business of the chapter in conformity with the policies and programs of Alpha Gamma Sigma.
The Executive Committee shall be composed of the elected officers, shall have power to act for the Board of Directors between meetings, and shall be the interim committee between semesters.
ARTICLE VII: COMMITTEES
Section 1. Program Committee. The vice-president shall serve as the chairman of the program committee. The committee shall develop a calendar of events that provides social and cultural enrichment and present the calendar to the Board or the general membership at the first meeting for approval. The committee shall see to it that necessary arrangements are completed one week prior to the event. The chairman shall poll the membership at the end of the semester to ascertain suggestions for the next semester.
Section 2. Membership Committeee. The treasurer shall serve as chairman of the membership committee. The committee shall be composed of the evening representative, chairman of communications, publicity, and social affairs. The committee shall be responsible for promoting membership recruitment; shall provess applications verifying eligibility, accuracy, and completeness, including the payment of dues by the specified deadline; shall issue membership cards to eligible members whose dues are paid.
Section 3. Communications. The chairman of communications shall form a committee for regular telephone contact with the members.
Section 4. Elections. The elections chairman shall serve as chairman of the nominating comittee and encourage nominations for chapter offices and for the Association Student Body offices. The report of the nominating committee shall be published in the newsletter.
Section 5. Evening Representative. The evening representative shall contact members who attend the college only in the evening and hold evening meetings as determined by the board of directors.
Section 6. Newsletter. The editor of the . . . shall publish a newsletter monthly and mail to all members, upon approval of the executive committee. A copy shall be filed in the Student Affairs Office and with the Associate Student Body President.
Section 7. Publicity. The chairman for publicity shall form a committee to publicize the activities of the chapter on the campus, in the cmapus newspaper, and in the community newspaper when possible.
Section 8. Scholarship. The scholarship chairman shall form a committee of three who are not applicants. The committee shall promote awareness on the campus and in the community of the Alpha Gamma Sigma scholarship program. Applications shall be filed in the . . . office during the . . . month of the semester. With the advisor, the committee shall meet . . . for the purpose of selecting the scholarship awardees. The scholarship presentation shall be made at an appropriate ceremony.
Section 9. Service. The service chairman shall provide each member with the Service Hour Regulations, keep members informed of service opportunities, collect service cards monthly, verify accuracy, and make a chapter record. College or AGS service hour credit can be signed by the president or the advisor. Commmunity service hour credit should be signed by the person in charge or authorized personnel.
Section 10. Ways and Means. The ways and means chairman shall form a committee which shall plan, organize, and conduct fund-raising activities in behalf of the scholarship fund.

All events shall have [rior approval of the board of directors and the Associated Student Body Council.
Section 11. Special Committees. Additional committees may be formed as directed by the board of directors.
ARTICLE VIII: PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY
The rules contained in Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern this organization in all parliamentary procedure in which they are not inconsistent with these by-laws.
ARTICLE IX: CEREMONIES
All permanent members shall be entitle dto wear the gold tassel and gold sash at graduation. In the event the member is not graduating and is only transferring, said student shall be entitled to receive the gold tassel and sash provided the minimum requirements have been met.
ARTICLE X: AMENDMENTS
Bylaws not governed by the Alpha Gamma Sigma Inc. bylaws may be amended at any regular meeting of the chapter by a two-thirds (2/3) vote, provided notice of the proposed amendment has been presented in writing at least one week prior to the meeting at which the proposed amendment is to be voted on.
Amendment 1. $50.00 to $60.00 shall be kept separate from the general Alpha Gamma Sigma account. All other money shall be deposited in the Alpha Gamma Sigma general account when the surplus surpasses $60.00. The cash box shall be kept in the A.G.S. lock box for use in fundraising or any use deemed necessary by the Executive Council.
Amendment 2. All A.G.S. executive officers shall be recognized for their service to the organization in their respective transcripts.
ARTICLE XI: SCHOLARSHIPS
Section 1. Ed Walsh Outstanding Service Award - This award recognizes achievement in service to the Alpha Gamma Sigma organization.
Section 2. Kathleen D. Loly Scholarship Award - This award is open to members who display academic excellence. Two Loly applicants who receive the highest ratings from a state-wide committee shall be designated the Virginia Coffey Award winners. No additional application is required.
Section 3. Robert Mantovani Award - This award recognizes excellence in both service for and leadership in the Alpha Gamma Sigma organization.
ARTICLE XII: HONOR CODE
Section 1. Oath ot uphold the honesty and integrity of the honor society

I swear to be honest in all my dealings with all people at Mission College. I understand that I will be excluded from this organization if I lie, cheat, plagiarize, or engage in any activity which would harm the reputations of staff, faculty, or students at Mission College.
Section 2. Any Alpha Gamma Sigma member suspected of violating the Oath of Honor, as stated in Section 1, will be called to defend him/herself in front of the executive board and its sponsor. If it is found that the member has violated the Oath of Honor, the member shall be excluded from the organization.
Section 3. Members of Alpha Gamma Sigma are encouraged to report any observations of lying, cheating, or plagiarizing to appropriate persons.
Section 4. Alpha Gamma Sigma reserves the right to exclude any student who is belligerent at meetings, or on campus toward students, faculty, and staff members at Mission College. It also reserves the right to exclude any member who discredits the organization or Mission College.
