Summer 2020 Research Internship Opportunity

Want to gain research experience within the field of Biology? Participants in the Summer Research and Internship program will gain firsthand experience working with faculty at participating institutions including UCLA, CSULA, CSUN, and USC.

To be eligible to apply you must be:

• Currently enrolled at Los Angeles Mission College as your primary college
• Planning to transfer in a STEM major
• Completed at least 2 STEM course
• Willing to make full-time commitment for Summer 2020
• Willing to enroll in Biotech 8: Biological Research Internship (2 units) during summer

NEWEST Summer 2020 Opportunities!

• Participation in a meaningful research experience early in one's undergraduate education has been shown to increase persistence in, and enthusiasm for, earning a STEM degree. The Chevron Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program will support freshmen and sophomore undergraduate students from both CSUB and community colleges to work alongside a faculty member on a summer science or engineering research project. Participants will earn a $1,000 stipend after the successful completion of the program. Application deadline is Friday, March 27th, 2020. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by Friday, April 24th. ​SURE is a four-week program that takes place May 26 - June 18, 2020, Monday - Thursday 9am - 4pm.

•  As a Health Scholar, you will gain firsthand experience in both clinical and administrative health care settings and become an integral part of the care delivery team. You will assist with basic care for patients alongside nurses, physicians and other members of the care delivery team, and have opportunities to learn the “business” of health care, preparing you for your health care career. For more information click here. Spring Applications are now open and are due March 31st, 2020. The internship will take place June 1st, 2020.

2020 Summer Washington State University - RISE (Research in Interdisciplinary STEM Education

• ​A 9-week residential summer research experience for undergraduate students in chemistry, education, life sciences, mathematics, or physics.  Participants will join interdisciplinary teams mentored by faculty to investigate STEM learning across formal and informal environments with a focus on understanding issues related to inclusivity and diversity in STEM.  The program starts in April with “Gear Up for Research”, a series of virtual lab group meetings designed for RISE participants to meet their faculty mentors and research teams, learn about their summer project, and learn basic skills and research protocols for the summer program. Click here for more information. Applications are now available and will close February 7th, 2020. The internship will take place April 15th, 2020 - July 31st, 2020.

2020 Summer NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Internship Research for Undergraduates Program- Mississippi State University

• The cohort of students will participate in exciting renewable energy research projects as well as professional development, social and outreach activities. Student participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, a housing and meal plan for ten weeks, and travel assistance. Click here for more information. • Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) is a scholarly field that combines disciplinary expertise in a STEM field (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.) with research methods from cognitive science, psychology and the learning sciences. REU participants will have the opportunity to engage in novel research projects in an important and exciting field:  model-based reasoning in STEM Education. • The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology’s research experience for undergraduates program, “Exploration of Marine Biology on the Oregon Coast” (EMBOC) offers fellowship opportunities for undergraduate students from both 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities to participate in ongoing marine science research at the University of Oregon’s marine lab during the summer months. In addition to conducting research at OIMB, students participating in the EMBOC program will participate in weekly professional development discussions and training sessions, social activities, field trips and marine biology seminars. • Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research (At the NIH "biomedical sciences" includes everything from behavioral and social sciences, through biology and chemistry, to physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology, and biostatistics). 2020 Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine - Summer Research Program for Undergraduate Students

• The program provides an opportunity for veterinary and undergraduate students interested in veterinary medicine to explore non-practice careers by engaging in a mentored research project through informal and formal interactions with scientists. Veterinary students will also travel to the National Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Symposium. It is anticipated that the positive experiences during the summer program will inspire students to pursue rewarding careers in veterinary and biomedical research. Click here for more information. • The Washington University Summer Engineering Fellowship (WUSEF) program is designed to encourage exceptional students from backgrounds underrepresented in the STEM fields, including underrepresented minority students, students from economically disadvantaged and underserved backgrounds and students with disabilities, to participate in engineering research. Fellows will enjoy a rewarding summer research experience at one of the nation’s top universities.Projects will be in the general areas of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science and materials science. • The NSF funded KBS REU Site “Ecological & Evolutionary Dynamics in a Changing World” gives students an opportunity to conduct full-time research in collaboration with our outstanding faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. All REU positions offer a generous stipend, FREE room and board at KBS, up to $550 towards travel costs, and up to $250 for research supplies. • This program is designed for motivated undergraduate students from groups that have been shown by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be underrepresented in health sciences on a national basis and who are interested in seeking future training in a combined MD/PhD program or an academically oriented career in medicine. 2020 Summer CDU/UCLA Cancer Center Partnership to Eliminate Cancer Health Disparities - Undergraduate Cancer Research Training Program (UCRTP)

• The Undergraduate Cancer Research Training Program (UCTRP) is an 12 week NCI sponsored research program designed for outstanding undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in biomedical sciences. An individualized program is developed for each undergraduate participant, who will be paired to work with a faculty Principal Investigator and associates at CDU or UCLA laboratories on a selected cancer research project. On completion of the program, each undergraduate trainee will have worked on a hypothesis-driven research project in cancer health disparities and developed a research paper (based on the findings of the ancillary project).Click the link for more information. Applications are now available and will close February 29th, 2020. To accommodate students on the semester or quarter systems, two different program tracks will be provided.

2019 EERE Robotics Summer Internship

• The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) Robotics Internship Program is a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in a field related to robotics, manufacturing, or engineering. Undergraduate students receive a $600 per week stipend & Up to $1,000 to/from assigned location for interns whose home location is more than 50 miles from the hosting facility. • Health Career Connection (HCC) is a comprehensive professional development program that provides paid summer internships to undergraduate and recent graduates in the field of public health and health care. • The GEM course is an introductory microbiology course for early career undergraduates who are contemplating a career in scientific research. The course combines classroom learning with hands-on activities.
